INDISCIPLINE: MAJOR OBSTACLE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19.

 (Article By Sir Charles Freeman)

Indiscipline can be defined as failure to control one's behaviour and/or to disobey rules and regulations of a society. The opposite which is discipline is the act of compliance or conformity to rules and regulations of a society. I may not be wrong to say disobedience, stubborness and waywardness are children of indiscipline.

Indiscipline is dated back from creation and still with us. Our first parents disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. From creation to date, animals continue to eat herbs as their food but man is not satisfied with fruits and vegetables. Male animal goes for female animal as partners for continuity of their generation. But some men go for men whereas some women go for women as married partners.

Apart from the day Joshua commanded the Sun to stand still without moving (Joshua 10:12-14), the Sun always rises from the East and sets at the West. God set bars and doors for the Sea, and ordered it not to go beyond its bounds, and the Sea always obeys God.If not, all of us would have been devoured by it. Man has not been taken proper care of God's creation, even though we're the stewards of God's creation.

Firstly, filt is engulfing us. Human beings throw rubbish indiscriminately thereby polluting the environment, chocking gutters, blocking water-ways and the resultant flood is killing people and destroying property.

Secondly, our leaders give permits for insensitive human beings to build in waterlogged areas, river bodies and water ways. The land created for us is not enough.

Thirdly, we are polluting our rivers, using poisonous chemicals like DDT (Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloromethane) to hunt fishes and also make our rivers polluted.

Furthermore, we are destroying our lands indiscriminately in the name of searching for the precious minerals through the acts of galamsey. Mercury, which is used in such activities goes into our water bodies and when people drink from such water bodies,it causes health issues.

Lastly, we pollute the air that we breathe by throwing all sorts of poisonous gases into the air which are not good for animals, plants and human being.

No wonder today we have COVID-19, the deadly illness to battle with. Animals are walking about freely as family; in groups and in pairs but man can't do same.

Human beings are gregarious. We like being in companies or in groups. From creation, God said it wasn't good for man to live alone. However, today we are being denied of being in groups because of COVID-19. Our movements are being restricted in many ways. Who and what caused it?  Indiscipline among us might be the cause.

As there's no vaccine to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and there's no drug for cure, the best way to protect ourselves from getting the CORONAVIRUS and avoid spreading it involve washing hands with soap and running water, using hand sanitizer from time to time, avoid shaking of hands, practising social distancing, wearing nose masks, quarantine, self isolation, and so on. All these involve self-discipline. But the question is, how can we turn from our indiscipline attitude?

I'm sorry to say that Ghanaians have problems of indiscipline. We hardly obey simple rules and regulations. Because of indiscipline, COVID-19 keeps on spreading.

During the lockdown in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi, we saw and heard many people coming out of their houses just to see what was going on in the streets. Today, many are those who refuse to wear the face masks. Even those who wear them, you see the mask covering only their mouths and sometimes, the it is lowered below the chin. Many are those who refuse to use hand sanitizer. Some people refuse to wash their hands with soap and running water. Market places are choked as usual with buyers and sellers, drivers are still loading passengers contrary to protocols- all because of indiscipline.

If there's no drug and vaccine for now and only way forward to fighting COVID-19 is following all the protocols prescribed by the government, how can we win over the disease when indiscipline is on the rise?

In 2015, I was standing in front of a shop at Bath City in England (UK). In front of the shop, there were two litter bins. Then I saw a black women coming and eating an apple. She got to the front of the shop, threw the left-over of the apple on the ground, and cleaned her hands with a handkerchief. A Whiteman looked at her, bent down, picked the leftover, put it inside the litter bin and I clapped for the whiteman. Then I guessed that this black woman might be a Ghanaian; and my guess was correct after having approached the woman.

In my conclusion, if COVID-19 continues to hold onto indiscipline as a weapon, we will find it difficult to fight it. Being disciplined in this era is a must. It appears COVID-19 is going to live with us longer than we are expected. The disciplined ones shall survive in God's name.✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
